Plato’s 6 Rules of Leadership for Today’s World

plato

He is one of the most famous names in history. Greek philosopher Plato understood human nature.

If you’re a team leader or manager – Plato’s 6 rules for leadership will help you get the job done.

1. Put the “Human” back into “Human Resources”

“Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a harder battle.”

Today, we all face a struggle of some kind. The effective team leader knows that and does not treat people like machines. Offer respect, give dignity and celebrate even tiny victories. As leader, you’re in the self-esteem business whether you know it or not.

2. Let your team own their style

“Never discourage anyone…who continually makes progress, no matter how slow.”

As long as your people are making progress and growing, they are adding value to the organization. We all work at a different pace. Let your people own their trajectory.

3. Show humility

“I am the wisest man alive, for I know one thing, and that is that I know nothing.”

The egomaniac, know-it-all and bully are managers from a bygone era. They have no place in the modern organization in need of bridge building. Showing humility – admitting you don’t know everything – puts a human face to your leadership, facilitating the respect you need to lead.

4. Keep the focus on where it belongs – results

“You should not honor men more
than truth.”

The most credible and trusted leaders are those who pursue ideas and principles, not the favor of other people. Indifferent to brown nosing, they stand for excellence, honesty and results.

5. Give words of support daily

“People are like dirt. They can either nourish you and help you grow as a person or they can stunt your growth and make you wilt and die.”

Plato understood the power of words. Motivate your people by using words of encouragement, spotting them doing things right, and giving them credit, publicly.

6. Speak to be understood

“Poets utter great and wise things which they do not themselves understand.”

Drop the buzz phrases and speak in plain language. Leadership is about communicating messages quickly and clearly, not about trying to impress others.

Plato’s bottom line: Show your humanity and lead with strength.
