The headline is a quote from author Gary Bishop and it made me think about my own life.
What is it that I am “putting up with” but would rather not?
For starters, I have a few friends who are negative, self-centered people – unwilling to hear me out. I put up with them.
My career has stagnated somewhat in recent years. I have settled into a comfort zone and my inner voice is begging me to step out and try new things. I am putting up with that endless state of comfort.
Often, I engage in projects that are not in harmony with my values. For the sake of an extra dollar, I put up with that.
What about you?
Are you putting up with the way things are, instead of taking action to change?
The truth is, deep down, most of us know we can do better in life – we can help more people, we can launch that business idea we’ve been thinking about for years, and we can make our mark out there in more impactful ways.
But something stops us.
It may be that we’re comfortable with the way things are, that we have a natural tendency to procrastinate – we may be afraid of the future – or we may believe we will live forever and there is plenty of time.
Whatever the reasons, we end up with the life we are willing to accept.
The more I think about this, the more I want to just make a list of all the things I am really not willing to accept anymore and see what changes can be made.
I may surprise myself at how easy it will be.
Do we have the life we’re willing to put up with?
